7 Key Things Your Movers Need to Know

Sep 15, 2022

If you want your move to go off without a hitch, communication with your movers is key. In addition to knowing the distance of your move, there are some things your professional movers will need to know in advance to make sure your move goes as smoothly as possible. Answers to these questions will help your moving company determine the equipment and supplies they need as well as how many movers will be required to get the job done!

7 Key Things Your Movers Need to Know

A reputable moving company will ask all the right questions to be fully prepared to move you quickly and efficiently. Here are some standard questions you’ll be asked, so save yourself some time and find out the answers before you schedule your move.

What floor are you moving from and to? If your old and new home have multiple flights of stairs or an elevator, your movers will want to know this in advance. This will affect the number of movers needed and the type of equipment required as well the length of time your move will take.

Can our moving truck park close to the door? Proximity matters when it comes to the equipment needed, the safety of the movers if streets or parking lots need to be crossed, and the length of time allocated for your move.

Are there stairs? If so, how many? Just like the multiple-floor question, your moving company will want to know if stairs will need to be climbed. This will directly determine how many movers will be assigned to move your belongings up and down in addition to any special equipment necessary.

How many rooms are we moving? Your movers want to be sure the vehicle they bring can hold all that needs to be moved, so the number of rooms - and their contents - will be asked up front. This bit of information will also ensure they plan enough time to get all rooms moved.

If we're moving your whole home, what is the square footage? This is a similar question to the number of rooms but will also help the moving company estimate the length of time to navigate your entire home. Square footage combined with the number of stairs and proximity to your door all play a major role in scheduling out your move. If you don’t know the square footage of your home, you can check your property deed, search public property records, or give measuring on your own a try.

Do you have any odd items to move such as pianos, grandfather clocks or gun safes? It’s pretty obvious why this question is asked: the number of movers, type of equipment and size of vehicle will all be dictated by any large and heavy items you need moved.

Are we packing for you? Because packing is a service separate from the actual move, your moving company will definitely ask if you need packing services. Full or partial packing will define the number of movers and the hourly allotment. They can also let you know what type of prep work you can do ahead of time to guarantee a productive moving process.
