The Key to Moving Your Piano

Nov 15, 2022

If you're like most homeowners, you probably have a few prized possessions that are especially important to you. Maybe it's your antique grandfather clock, or your expensive oriental rug. Whatever it is, you'll want to take special care when moving it so that it doesn't get damaged in the process. One of the most valuable and delicate items in many homes is a piano. If you're planning on moving one soon, here are a few tips to help make sure the move goes as smoothly as possible.

DIY Piano Moving

Equipment

First of all, it's critical to have the right equipment.

  • Piano dolly, which is a specialized platform designed to move a piano safely.
  • Moving straps, which will help to secure the piano to the dolly.
  • At least four people to help with the move – pianos are very heavy, and trying to move one by yourself is a recipe for disaster.

Preparation

Once you have all the supplies you need, it's time to start preparing the piano for the move.

  1. First, measure all areas where the piano needs to pass to be sure it will fit: hallways, doorways, stairs, etc.
  2. Remove any loose objects from the piano, such as sheet music or decorations. Then, open up the lid so that it's in a vertical position. This will help make the piano more stable and less likely to tip over.
  3. Now it's time to lift the piano onto the dolly. You'll need at least two people for this step, and possibly more depending on the size and weight of the piano. Once the piano is in place, use the straps to secure it to the dolly.
  4. And finally, cover it with a piano moving blanket or other thick, padded mat to help protect it during the move.

Moving

With the piano properly secured, you're now ready to start moving it to its new location - whether it’s another room in your house, into a POD, or onto a moving truck. Be careful to safely navigate corners to prevent any damage to the piano.

Unstrap and remove from the dolly. If you are moving your piano to another location outside of your home, leave it covered and protected.

Hiring a Professional Piano Moving Company

There are many reasons why it’s a good idea to hire a professional piano moving company. Here are just a few:

Experience

Professional movers who offer piano services have been there and done that. They have the experience and expertise to ensure that your piano is moved correctly and without incident. They also have the necessary equipment to safely and securely move pianos, saving you time and money renting or purchasing your own.

Licensed and Insured

A reputable piano moving company will have the necessary equipment and training to safely move your piano, as well as the insurance coverage needed to protect your investment in case of any damage.

Prevent Injury

Pianos are extremely heavy and difficult to move. If you try to move one yourself, you could easily end up injuring yourself or damaging the piano. Leave the heavy lifting to the experts!
